JACKSON, Miss.—The Birmingham-Southern softball team won its seventh- and eighth-straight games today against Millsaps College in Jackson, Miss. The Panthers won by the scores of 5-2 and 10-1, moving to 9-5 on the season.
In game one, the Panthers put up the first run in the top of the fifth on a sacrifice fly-out by junior Emily Merritt, but the Majors answered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Their lead was short-lived, however, as BSC scored four runs in the top of the sixth on an RBI single from sophomore Danielle Rucker, a two-RBI single from junior Ashley Bice, and a run walked in. BSC held Millsaps scoreless for the remainder of the game to take the 5-2 win.
Junior Ronni Ferris (4-3) pitched all seven innings for BSC and allowed eight hits with two earned runs and 10 strikeouts. Sophomore Jordan Allen was 3-of-4 at the plate.
In the second game, Millsaps scored its only run in the bottom of the first, and kept the 1-0 lead until the top of the fifth, when a run scored on an error and a two-RBI single by junior Beth Lefler gave the Panthers a 3-1 lead. The Panthers exploded for seven more runs in the top of the seventh, thanks to a Lefler RBI single, another run walked in, an RBI single from Allen, a two-RBI single by Rucker, a ground-out RBI from Ferris, and an RBI single from Bice.
Bice was a perfect 4-of-4 at the plate, and Lefler was 3-of-4. Lefler (3-2) also threw all seven innings and gave up four hits and one run with two strikeouts.
The Panthers are at home on Thursday for an exhibition game against Marion Military Institute before opening Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play on the road this weekend against Centre College in Danville, Ky.
