Softball splits at Centre

DANVILLE, Ky.—
The Birmingham-Southern softball team split today on the road at Centre College, winning the first game 9-1 in five innings, but losing the second game 3-2 in eight innings. The Panthers move to 10-6 overall and 1-1 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.

In the first game, BSC was 12-of-24 at the plate, led by sophomore Danielle Rucker, who was 4-of-4 with three RBI. The Panthers scored three runs in the top of the first inning, one in the top of the second, three in the top of the third, and two in the top of the fourth. Junior Ronni Ferris pitched all five innings and gave up four hits and no earned runs with nine strikeouts.

In the second game, BSC scored one run in the top of the first and kept the 1-0 lead until the bottom of the fifth when Centre scored two runs to go up 2-1. The Panthers tied it up in the top of the seventh, and the game went to extra innings, when the Colonels were able to score in the bottom of the eighth to end the game on a walk-off home run.

Junior Ashley Bice was 3-of-4 at the plate to lead the Panthers, who had seven total hits. Bice and Rucker recorded BSC's two RBI. Junior Beth Lefler started in the circle and threw 4.1 innings, allowing eight hits and two earned runs before Ferris came in for the final three innings, giving up one hit and one earned run with one strikeout.

The teams are back in action again tomorrow in a noon ET doubleheader.
