Softball sweeps Maryville on the road
MARYVILLE, Tenn.—The Birmingham-Southern softball team picked up two wins today against Maryville, sweeping the Scots in a doubleheader by the scores of 8-1 and 3-0.
The Panthers now stand at 8-2 on the season.
In game one, BSC scored its first run in the top of the first inning when junior Danielle Rucker came home on a wild pitch. Maryville tied it up with a run in the bottom of the second, which would end up being the only one of the day for the Scots. Freshman Bethany Fronk got the game-winning RBI with two outs on the board in the top of the second on a sacrifice fly-out, and senior Ashley Bice put two more on the board with a two-run double in the next at-bat.
The Panthers went up 6-1 in the top of the fifth on a sac fly from Bice after a lead-off triple from Fronk, and a single RBI home run from freshman Taylor Bassett. BSC added two more in the top of the sixth on a two-run double from Fronk, eventually winning 8-1.
Fronk also started in the circle and got the win to move to 3-0, throwing four innings and giving up five hits with three strikeouts. Senior Ronni Ferris came in for the last three innings and got her second save of the year, allowing one hit with four strikeouts.
Four different Panthers led at the plate with two hits apiece. Fronk was 2-of-2 with three RBI, Bice was 2-of-3 with three RBI, Bassett was 2-of-3 with one RBI, and freshman Joanna Jernigan was 2-of-3 as well.
Game two was much closer, with BSC scoring a single run in the top of the third on a Maryville error and not scoring again until the top of the sixth when junior Brittany Berkopec led off with a home run and Rucker recorded an RBI single to put the Panthers up 3-0. BSC held Maryville scoreless for the last two innings.
Ferris started and got the win to move to 3-2 on the season, allowing four hits with one strikeout in four innings. Fronk came in for the final three innings and got the save, her third of the season, while giving up two hits with one strikeout.
Rucker and Bice led with two hits apiece and were both 2-of-4.
The Panthers return home this Tuesday, March 13, facing Mississippi College in a 3 p.m. doubleheader at BSC Softball Park.
