Softball splits with Mississippi College

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The Birmingham-Southern softball team returned home on Tuesday and split with Mississippi College, dropping the first game, 4-3, but winning game two 6-1.

The Panthers move to 9-3, while the Choctaws are now 10-6.

In the first game, BSC got on the board first with two runs in the bottom of the first inning, courtesy of an RBI double from freshman Taylor Bassett and an RBI single from junior Brittany Berkopec. MC responded with four runs in the top of the second. BSC scored once more in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single by freshman Bethany Fronk, but was unable to score again, giving the Choctaws the 4-3 victory.

Senior Ronni Ferris took the loss in the circle after giving up four hits and all four earned runs in 1.1 innings. Fronk came in for the remaining 5.2 innings and allowed four hits with two strikeouts. Ferris also had one strikeout.

The Panthers recorded nine total hits, one more than Mississippi College, led by Bassett, Fronk, and senior Ashley Bice with two hits each.

In the nightcap, the Choctaws scored early, putting a run on the board in the top of the first, and kept the 1-0 lead until the bottom of the fifth, when an RBI double from Bice tied things up. After a pitching change, Bassett hit a two-run home run to put the Panthers up 3-1. BSC added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth on another RBI from Bice and a two-run single by Bassett.

Senior Beth Lefler was the pitcher of record, moving to 3-0 on the season after giving up seven hits with three strikeouts in five innings. Fronk came in for the final two innings and got the save, her third of the year, allowing three hits with two strikeouts.

Hits were even at 10 for each team, but MC committed four errors to BSC's one. Bice led at the plate, going 3-of-4, while Bassett was 2-of-3 and led with four RBI. Freshman Erin Lopez was also 2-of-4 at the plate.

The Panthers are at home again this Friday, taking on Marion Military Institute in a 4 p.m. doubleheader.
