Softball splits with LaGrange to cap off regular season
LaGRANGE, Ga.—The Birmingham-Southern softball team went on the road today and split with LaGrange College to wrap up the regular season. The Panthers won the first game, 8-0 in five innings, but lost in game two, 1-0.
BSC now stands at 30-8 on the year.
In game one, the Panthers scored twice in the third inning on RBIs from senior Ashley Bice and junior Brittany Berkopec, then twice more in the fourth on RBIs from junior Chelsea Fernandez and freshman Joanna Jernigan. BSC added four more in the fifth off two RBIs each from senior Ronni Ferris and Fernandez.
Ferris also got the win in the circle to move to 12-4 on the season, striking out 12 batters in five innings while giving up only three hits in the shutout.
Fernandez was 3-3 at the plate, and Bice was 2-3. BSC had nine total hits.
In the second game, LaGrange scored its only run of the game in the fifth inning while holding BSC scoreless.
Freshman Bethany Fronk took the loss, throwing all six innings and giving up four hits and one earned run with five strikeouts.
Ferris led at the plate, going 2-3.
BSC begins post-season play this weekend, entering the SCAC Championship as the top seed in the East Division. The Panthers will play on Friday at 4 p.m., taking on the winner of the game between the number two seed in the West, Southwestern, and the number three East seed Rhodes. The championship is hosted by Rhodes in Millington, Tenn.
