TYLER, Texas—The Birmingham-Southern softball team was eliminated from NCAA Regional play by the host seventh-ranked UT Tyler Patriots, 5-0, Sunday afternoon in Tyler, Texas.
BSC ends its season with a 36-11 record, while UTT moves to 38-8 and advances to face No. 17 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps this evening. The winner of that game will face No. 4 Pacific Lutheran in the Regional Championship tomorrow.
Tyler's Heather Abshire picked up her second win of the Tyler Regional tournament, tossing all seven innings and scattering three hits while striking out two batters. She lowered her weekend ERA to 0.82.
Abshire also starred at the plate, going 2-for-4 and knocking a 2-RBI single in the top of the sixth inning.
A total of five Patriot players collected two base hits in the game. Katelyn Thomason, Brittany Hay, Carli Wheeler and Ashlee Johnson also knocked a pair of base hits in the contest.
Freshman Bethany Fronk absorbed the loss for the Panthers, giving up two earned runs over 3.1 innings. Senior Ronni Ferris, who picked up two complete-game wins Saturday, gave up two runs in 3.2 innings of relief.
Junior Brittany Berkopec went 2-for-3 for Birmingham-Southern at the plate.
Wheeler put UT Tyler on the board in the top of the second with an RBI single that scored Joey Cronin, who led off the inning by reaching base on an error. After a steal of second base, Wheeler came home on Johnson's RBI single.
Trailing 2-0, the Panthers briefly dented Abshire's line in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs and a runner on, freshman Taylor Bassett appeared to knock her second home run of the tournament; however, the runs were waived off when her teammate Jordan Allen was ruled out for leaving base early, ending the inning.
With the momentum shift, the Patriots were able to breeze ahead the rest of the way, as Abshire only allowed two more hits for the remainder of the game.
