BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Birmingham-Southern (3-1) scored 17 runs on 14 hits to sweep a softball doubleheader from Maryville College (0-6) on Saturday at the BSC Softball Park. The Panthers won game one 9-1 in six innings and game two 8-0 in five innings.
BSC scored two runs in the second inning to break a 1-1 tie and take a 3-1 lead and went on to add a run in the third, two in the fourth and three in the sixth to end the game due to the NCAA run rule.
Bethany Fronk struck out 10 Lady Scots and allowed one unearned run on four hits to improve to 2-0 on the season. FronK also delivered an RBI single and drew a walk at the plate
Alyssa Statham belted double and a home run, had two RBI and scored two runs while Danielle Rucker had two hits and two RBI to lead BSC's seven hit attack in game one. Freshman Deanna Creps, who had four RBI on the afternoon, drove in two runs and Taylor Bassett had an RBI double.
In game two, the Panthers scored one in the second, four in the third and three in the fifth to once again end the game due to the NCAA run rule.
Creps (1-1) pitched a two-hit shutout with three strikeouts to earn her first collegiate win in game two. The Union Grove, Ala., native also drove in two more runs and scored two runs.
Birmingham-Southern has a couple weeks off before going on the road to play Huntingdon College in Montgomery on Friday, March 1 at 1 p.m.
