BSC Softball Falls To No. 6 Roanoke, 7-3
ATLANTA, Ga. – Roanoke College (5-0) scored three runs in the third inning to break a 2-2 tie on the way to a 7-3 win over Birmingham-Southern (5-3) in the 3N2 Event hosted at the Emory Softball Field on Saturday.
The Maroons took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Leona Rainey was hit by a pitch to start the inning and score on an Alea Bier double and Hollee Warlinter's sac-fly scored Bier for the second run of the inning.
Bier started the Roanoke three-run third with a single and later scored on a wild pitch. Alexis Roop delivered a two RBI single to score Stephanie Clark and Warlitner.
Roanoke added two in the fourth to build a 7-2 lead. Rainey had an RBI double to scored Rhea Schleicher and Warlitner reached on a fielder's choice to score Rainey.
Joanna Jernigan walked to lead off the fifth and later scored on a Rucker ground out for the Panthers final run.
Bethany Fronk (4-2) had three strikeouts over four innings and gave up five runs on five hits to suffer the loss for BSC. Kelly Higbie (3-0) picked up the win for the Maroons with three strikeouts over seven innings while allowing three runs, one earned, on three hits.
The Panthers continue play in the 3N2 Event on Sunday against Roanoke at 9 a.m. and Emory at 1 p.m.
