BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Jacob Mayfield had a home run, two doubles and five RBI to lead Birmingham-Southern baseball to an 11-1 Southern Athletic Association win over Sewanee (4-3; 0-1) Saturday at Stripling Field.
The Panthers got the scoring started with a two run second. Jeremy Hatley, who went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, singled and later scored on a David Bourbonnais single to right field. Brandon Perry, who had two hits, doubled home Bourbonnais to give BSC a 2-0 lead.
Mayfield started BSC's three-run third with a double down the left field line to score Taylor McCracken. Mayfield scored on a Hatley double and Hatley came around on an Ethan Netherton single to push the lead to 5-0.
Sewanee got on the board in the fourth on a Jack Rogers RBI single to cut the deficit to 5-1.
Mayfield, who finished 3-for-5, belted a two-run home run to score Evan Grovenstein and give BSC a 7-1 lead in the fifth.
BSC scored four runs to end the game in the eighth. Brandon Marino had a pinch-hit RBI single and Mayfield double in the final two runs to highlight the inning.
Blake Stevens was the winning pitcher for BSC, improving to 2-0. Stevens pitched five innings allowing one unearned run on two hits with six strikeouts.
Charles Warren was the pitcher of record for Sewanee after giving up seven runs on eight hits with three strikeouts to fall to 1-1.
The Panthers continue its SAA series against Sewanee on Sunday with a doubleheader at 12 p.m.
