BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Sophomore Taylor Bassett went 5-of-7 with a double, two home runs and four RBI to lead Birmingham-Southern(9-7) to a doubleheader sweep of Covenant College(1-13) Thursday at the BSC Softball Park.
After claiming game one 8-2, the Panthers found themselves tied 8-8 following a Covenant seven-run rally in the top of the sixth.
BSC answered in the bottom of half of the sixth with four runs. Danielle Rucker tripled and scored on an Alyssa Statham ground out to give BSC a 9-8 lead. Bassett followed with a solo home run and Deanna Creps doubled home Katelyn Murray and Bethany Fronk for a 12-8 advantage.
The Panthers scored three runs in the first and second innings to stake to an early 6-0 lead. Bassett belted a two run home run and Murray delivered an RBI double in the first and Rucker had an RBI single in the three-run second.
Covenant cut the lead to 6-1 in the fourth before BSC pushed two more runs across the plate in the fifth to extend the lead to 8-1. Elizabeth Ballew had an RBI double and Joanna Jernigan singled home Ballew in the inning.
In game one, the Scots grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first only to see BSC tie the game when Brittany Berkopec scored on a Fronk ground out in the bottom of the frame.
The game remained tied until the Panthers' seven-run fourth inning to take an 8-1 lead. Rucker tripled to left center to score Berkopec and Jernigan. Statham and Creps had run scoring doubles while Murray and Fronk had RBI singles.
Bethany Fronk was the winning pitcher in both games for the Panthers, improving to 8-5 overall. Fronk pitched a complete game with six strikeouts while yielding two runs, one earned, and scattering eight hits in game one. Fronk entered game two with the bases loaded and one out and would eventually stranded two runners on base to keep the game tied, 8-8.
Jernigan finished the doubleheader 4-for-7 with two runs scored and an RBI while Murray was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI. Rucker went 3-for-7 with three RBI and two runs scored and Statham was 3-for-7 with two runs scored and two RBI. Fronk was 3-for-8 with three runs scored and two RBI.
Cori Hilt (1-5) allowed eight runs, no earned on 11 hits with one strikeout to suffer the game one loss for the Scots. Hannah Rogers gave up 11 runs on 14 hits with a strikeout as CC's game two pitcher of record.
The Panthers return to Southern Athletic Association play against Centre College on Saturday at 11 a.m. and Sunday a 1 p.m.
