DANVILLE, Ky. – The Birmingham-Southern softball team swept a Southern Athletic Association doubleheader from Centre College by the scores of 5-3 and 5-4 Saturday at the South Campus Complex.
The sweep moved the Panthers win streak to eight straight games while improving to 12-7 overall and 6-2 in the SAA. Centre dropped to 2-8 overall and 1-7 in conference play.
Centre got a run in the bottom of the third to make it a 3-2 game before BSC stretched the lead to 5-2 with in the fifth. Daniel Rucker walked and scored on a Fronk single and a Kateyln Murray sac-fly scored Bassett.
Centre cut the BSC lead to 5-3 with a run in the bottom of the fifth.
Fronk got the game one win in the circle for her seventh win this week. Fronk struck out six while yielding three runs on seven hits.
The Panthers pushed the go ahead run across the plate in the top of the seventh to pull out the win in game two. Alyssa Statham reached on an error and advanced to second on the play. Bassett was intentionally walked and Fronk would reach on an error that allowed Statham score.
BSC scored a run in the second and fourth and added two in the fifth to build a 4-0 lead. Murray had an RBI single in the second and Bassett belted her fifth home run of the week in the fourth. The Panthers took advantage of two Centre errors to plate two runs in the fifth.
The Colonels battled back to tie the game with four runs on five hits in the fifth to set up the BSC seventh.
Deanna Creps pitched a complete tame to earn the game two win for BSC. Creps struck out two and allowed four runs on seven hits.
The Panthers return to action with a doubleheader against Maryville College on Tuesday at noon.
