BSC wins first two in Sewanee series

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.--The Birmingham-Southern softball team's conference winning streak swelled to eight games this afternoon with a sweep of the Sewanee Tigers at the BSC Softball Park.

BSC improved to 17-9 overall and 8-2 in SAA play with the sweep of the Friday doubleheader. The Panthers won game one 9-0 and game two 14-2, both in five innings.

In game one of the twin bill, sophomore Bethany Fronk used an impressive pitching performance to silence the Sewanee bats and boost her record to 13-7. Fronk would only surrender two hits in the contest, while fanning 12 Tiger batters.

BSC's offensive effort in game one was just as impressive. The Panthers scored early and often, plating runs in every inning in which they batted. Sophomore Taylor Bassett and freshman Katelyn Murray earned an RBI apiece in the bottom of the first to account for two of the three Panther runs in the inning. Bassett's strong day at the plate continued in the second with a two-run home run that also scored senior Danielle Rucker. Scoring for the Panthers wrapped in the fourth when Fronk's double scored senior Chelsea Fernandez.

The offensive production would continue in the afternoon's second game as once again BSC scored in every inning in which they batted. Sophomore Alyssa Statham's single brought in Bassett to open scoring in the Panther half of the first. Every batter but one reached base for the Panthers in the second as BSC posted eight runs in the frame. Berkopec's triple brought home three Panthers to start the inning's scoring. Singles from Rucker, Statham, and Fronk, accompanied by a triple from freshman pitcher Deanna Creps, brought in the rest of the Panther runs in the inning.

Five more runs in the next two innings would provide the run support Creps would need to earn the victory from the circle and move her record to 4-2 on the season. Creps would only give up two runs and two hits on the afternoon.

The pair of losses drop Sewanee to 5-10 overall and 0-10 in conference action. Tomorrow's doubleheader at noon at BSC Softball Park wraps up the series.
