CONWAY, Ark.--The Birmingham-Southern softball team split on the road today with Hendrix on day one of the series, winning game one 8-1 but losing in the nightcap 5-4 at Warrior Field in Conway, Ark.
The Panthers move to 20-10 overall and 11-3 in the Southern Athletic Association, while the Warriors move to 18-8 overall and 8-4 in league play.
In game one, BSC scored its first two runs in the top of the first inning on a Hendrix error and an RBI single by sophomore Bethany Fronk. The Warriors put up their lone run in the bottom of the first, and BSC added three more in the bottom of the fourth, with two scoring on another Hendrix error and another courtesy of an RBI from sophomore Joanna Jernigan, putting the Panthers up 5-1.
Fronk started in the circle and threw the complete game, getting the win to move to 15-7 on the season. She gave up four hits and one earned run with five strikeouts.
In game two, BSC got off to another quick start, scoring twice in the top of the first on another Bassett home run, this time good for two on the scoreboard. Bassett recorded another RBI in the top of the second on a single to put the Panthers up 3-0.
Hendrix got on the board in the bottom of the second, scoring on two RBI singles, and then took the first lead of the day in the bottom of the third with three runs scored on an RBI single and a two-run double, putting the Warriors up 5-3.
BSC cut it to 5-4 in the top of the sixth on a Statham RBI double, but the Panthers weren't able to score again to overcome the Warriors' single-run lead.
Both teams recorded 10 hits; Bassett led BSC, going 3-3 at the plate with three RBI. Statham and Jernigan were 2-3 and Fronk was 2-4.
Creps started in the circle and went 1.2 innings, giving up four hits and two earned runs before Fronk came in for the final 4.1 innings. She allowed six hits and three earned runs with two strikeouts, taking the loss to fall to 15-8.
The four-game series will conclude tomorrow with a noon doubleheader.
