Softball splits on the road against Trevecca Nazarene

NASHVILLE, Tenn.—The Birmingham-Southern softball team picked up its first win of the 2014 season on Saturday in the second game of a doubleheader against Trevecca Nazarene in Nashville, Tenn. The Panthers dropped game one, 5-4, in nine innings but rebounded to win game two, 3-2. The Panthers are now 1-3 while the Trojans move to 6-3.

In game one, BSC got on the board in the top of the second when junior Taylor Bassett doubled to plate junior Bethany Fronk, and the Panthers went up 3-0 in the top of the third on RBI singles from junior Hannah Harris and Bassett. The lead stood until the bottom of the seventh when TNU tied it up, scoring three runs with two outs on the board, sending the game to extra innings. BSC took back the lead in the top of the eighth when Fronk scored on an error, but the Trojans answered in the bottom of the eighth with a sac-fly to tie it back up 4-4. BSC was unable to score in the top of the ninth, and with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, TNU scored on a BSC error to win 5-4.

Bassett was 2-3 at the plate with two RBI, and freshman Amanda Ballew was 2-4. Fronk threw the complete game, giving up nine hits and three earned runs with three strikeouts.

Bassett led off the scoring in game two with a two-run double in the top of the first, and in similar fashion to the first game, scored again in the top of the third when freshman Torrie Garner hit the first home run of the season, putting BSC up 3-0. The Trojans were able to score twice in the bottom of the third, but BSC held them scoreless after that, allowing TNU only two hits and three bases for the remainder of the game to come away with the 3-2 victory.

Garner was 3-4, while Fronk and Bassett were both 2-4, and Bassett led with two RBI. Sophomore Deanna Creps started in the circle and went three innings, allowing three hits and two earned runs with two strikeouts. Fronk (1-3) came in and finished the game, picking up the win after giving up two hits and no runs with two strikeouts in four innings of work.

The Panthers open their home slate on Friday, Feb. 28, hosting Faulkner University in a 2 p.m. doubleheader at BSC Softball Park.
