Softball shuts out Covenant twice on the road

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga.—The Birmingham-Southern softball team picked up two shutouts today on the road, defeating Covenant College 2-0 and 9-0 in Lookout Mountain, Ga.

The Panthers are now 3-5 on the season and are at home this weekend for three doubleheaders, hosting Washington University on Friday at 1 p.m. and a conference series against Rhodes with noon doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday.

In game one today, the Panthers scored twice in the top of the fourth on Covenant errors for the only runs of the game. Freshman Taylor Harkins (1-1) threw the complete game for BSC, giving up four hits and one walk with seven strikeouts for the shutout win. The Panthers collected five total hits, led by junior Taylor Bassett going 2-3 at the plate.

In game two, which the Panthers won 9-0 in five innings, freshman Torrie Garner and junior Hannah Harris both hit home runs in the top of the second inning, and Garner homered again in the top of the third. Garner went 3-3 with three RBI, and junior Alyssa Statham also had four RBI after going 2-3. Junior Bethany Fronk (2-4) pitched all five innings and allowed three hits with four strikeouts and no walks.
