BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The Birmingham-Southern softball team opened Southern Athletic Association play today, winning two games against Rhodes at BSC Softball Park, 2-0 and 3-1.
The Panthers move to 5-7 and 2-0 in the SAA; the Lynx drop to 11-5 and 0-2 in the league.
Freshman Taylor Harkins (2-2) threw the complete-game shutout in game one, giving up six hits with three strikeouts and no walks. The game was scoreless until the bottom of the sixth, when junior Alyssa Statham led off with a walk, followed by junior Hannah Harris reaching on a fielder's choice and freshman Amanda Ballew doubling to left-center to put runners on second and third. Freshman Taylor Brewer hit a deep sac-fly to left field, allowing Harris to score, and BSC scored again on the next play on a Rhodes error.
In the nightcap, the Lynx scored once in the top of the second in what would turn out to be their only run of the game. A Statham RBI single in the bottom of the fourth tied things up, and the Panthers scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fifth on another Lynx error. Rhodes walked in a BSC insurance run later that inning when junior Taylor Bassett drew four balls with the bases loaded.
Junior Bethany Fronk (3-5) threw a complete game and gave up six runs and one earned run with one strikeout and no walks.
The series concludes tomorrow with a noon doubleheader at BSC Softball Park.
