MONTGOMERY, Ala.—The Birmingham-Southern softball team picked up two road wins Wednesday afternoon, sweeping Huntingdon in Montgomery by the scores of 7-1 and 5-0.
The Panthers moved to 4-2, while the Hawks fell to 3-5.
In game one, BSC scored three of its runs in the top of the second. The first was an RBI single from sophomore Amanda Ballew, and the next two were off a two-RBI single from junior Maddie Ridgway. A two-RBI double from senior Taylor Bassett in the top of the third put the Panthers up 5-0, and two more in the top of the fifth—an RBI single by sophomore Alex Skene, and a hit-by-pitch drawn by Ballew with the bases loaded— increased the lead to 7-0. Huntingdon's lone run came in the bottom of the sixth off a home run from Jesse Dunn.
Game two was a pitcher's duel, with no runs and five combined hits through the first five innings. BSC scored all five of its runs in the top of the sixth, beginning with a Bassett RBI double. Skene then drew a walk with the bases loaded, and a two-RBI single from Ridgway put BSC up 4-0. The final run was scored when Ridgway stole second, and Ballew scored from third on the throw.
Harkins also threw a complete game in the nightcap, giving up three hits in the shutout with six strikeouts. Ridgway and Bassett had two hits apiece.
The Panthers open Southern Athletic Association play this weekend at home, hosting Berry in noon doubleheaders both Saturday and Sunday at BSC Softball Park.
