MEMPHIS, Tenn.—The Birmingham-Southern softball team went 2-0-1 against Rhodes in Southern Athletic Association action today, winning 4-1 and 8-1 before the third game ended as a 6-6 tie due to darkness.
The Panthers moved to 8-4-1 overall and 4-2-1 in the SAA, while the Lynx fell to 1-12-1 overall and 0-2-1 in league play.
In game one, Rhodes led 1-0 until the top of the seventh, when senior Bethany Fronk led off with a double and a sac bunt by sophomore Alex Skene put Fronk on third. After a ground-out to put the second out on the board, senior Taylor Bassett singled to right field, plating Fronk to tie things up. A single to left by sophomore Maddie Ridgway put runners on first and second, and freshman Micaela Beck cleared the bases with a home run over the left field fence to put the Panthers up 4-1. Rhodes wasn't able to answer in the bottom of the seventh, and BSC came away with the win.
Fronk (4-1) started in the circle and threw the complete game, giving up five hits with three strikeouts.
The Panther offense was more prolific in game two, scoring three in the top of the second. Fronk scored on a passed ball, followed by a Bassett RBI double to bring Skene across the plate, and then BSC scored on a walk with the bases loaded. Beck scored on an error in the top of the fourth to put the Panthers up 4-0, and a two-RBI single from Bassett in the top of the fifth extended the lead to 6-0. The Lynx finally got on the board in the bottom of the sixth, but two more Bassett RBIs, this time off a double, put the Panthers up 8-1 in the top of the seventh to wrap up the game's scoring.
Freshman Taylor Harkins (4-3) pitched the complete game and allowed eight hits with three strikeouts. Bassett was 3-5 with five RBI to lead all players.
In the third and final game, the Lynx jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second. BSC answered in the top of the fourth when senior Alyssa Statham hit a two-run home run, but the Lynx increased their lead to 5-2 in the bottom of the fourth, and then 6-2 in the bottom of the fifth. Heading into the seventh, it looked as if Rhodes would come away with a win, but Bassett and Ridgway led off with singles, and Beck singled to cut it to 6-3. After that, with two outs on the board, Statham came through in a big way with another home run, tying the game at 6-6. Rhodes was unable to score in the bottom of the seventh, but the game was called due to darkness.
Fronk and Harkins split time in the circle, with Fronk starting and going two innings, and Harkins finishing the last five. They combined to give up six hits and only two walks.
The Panthers will take on Division II program Montevallo this Tuesday, March 17, at 5 p.m. before returning home next weekend to host Millsaps with noon doubleheaders both Saturday and Sunday at BSC Softball Park.
