BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The No. 7 Birmingham-Southern softball team learned today that it has received an at-large bid to the 2016 NCAA Championship, as the Panthers will travel to Rome, Ga., to face No. 9 Emory in the first round this Friday, May 13, at 1 p.m. EDT.
The regional will be hosted by Berry College, who defeated BSC to win the 2016 Southern Athletic Association championship this year, earning an automatic berth to the tournament.
The No. 7 Panthers (36-8) will face No. 9 Emory (40-4) at 1 p.m. EDT on Friday, followed by No. 4 Berry (36-6) against Piedmont (29-13) at 3:30 p.m. EDT.
BSC previously defeated Emory, then ranked second in the nation, back on April 9, winning both games of a doubleheader at BSC Softball Park. The Panthers are 2-3 this season against Berry, winning the regular season series, 2-1, but losing to the Vikings twice in the SAA Championship. BSC split with Piedmont early in the season on Feb. 21 in Demorest, Ga.
This will be BSC's second post-season appearance, having gone 2-2 in the Tyler, Texas, regional in 2012 after winning the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference title that season.
