Panthers Drop Night Series to No. 1 Berry

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern softball team came out tough in game one of its Southern Athletic Association doubleheader against No. 1 Berry College Friday night.  BSC (12-12, 6-7 SAA) trailed by just one run heading into the top of the seventh inning of game one, but eventually fell 7-4, and 13-1 in the nightcap.

Maddie Ridgway (Birmingham, Ala./Southern Mississippi) hit .400 on the night to lead the team offensively.  Taylor Harkins (Mountain Brook, Ala./Mountain Brook HS) struck out a team-best six batters.

Game one was very competitive.  The Vikings went up early 4-0.  BSC responded in the bottom of the third with two runs of their own and then held Berry scoreless in the fourth.

The Vikings were able to get one across in the fifth, but the Panthers responded in the bottom of the inning.  Kendall Hamm (Adamsville, Ala./Sumitron Christian HS) led off with a single down the left field line.  She advanced to second on the sac bunt by Torrie Garner (Woodstock, Ga./Etowah HS).

With two outs on the board, Alex Skene (Littleton, Colo./Mullen HS) worked her way to a walk.  Elizabeth Sims (Hebron, Ky./Conner HS) then reached on a throwing error by the shortstop, scoring Hamm and moving Skene to third.  Abby Spencer (Auburn, Ala./Auburn HS) then reached first on a fielding error by the shortstop, scoring Skene, to pull the Panthers within one, 5-4.  The next batter grounded out, but the damage was done.

With the bases loaded and no outs in the top of the sixth for Berry, Harkins then struck out the next two Vikings and forced the third to groundout to end the inning.

With one out on the board, Haley Crumpton (Alabaster, Ala./Thompson HS) singled through the left side.  She advanced to second on a fielding error by the pitcher.

Viking Marie Collop then threw a wild pitch and both Crumpton and Hamm, who reached on the error, advanced to scoring position.  Garner ripped a ball down the third baseline on a 2-2 count. The third baseman tagged Crumpton for the second out and Garner reached on a fielder's choice.

Anderson would then single up the middle on a 1-0 count, but Hamm was tagged trying to stretch in the tying run to end the inning.

Berry would put up two runs in the top of the seventh that the Panthers couldn't answer to secure the game one win.

The series concludes Saturday at noon, weather pending.  Fans should follow Birmingham-Southern athletics on twitter @bscsports or log onto bscsports.net for the most up-to-date information on game times.
