Panther men and women win 800 free relay at SAA Championship

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The Birmingham-Southern swimming and diving teams kicked off the 2015 Southern Athletic Association Championship with a bang Wednesday evening, with both teams winning the 800-yard free relay in the first event of the meet.

The women's relay team, made up of juniors Kristen Stempak, Lauren Kinsey, Lauren Robertson, and Molly Waddell, posted a time of 7:48.57, nearly two seconds ahead of second-place Rhodes and eight seconds ahead of the previous BSC record in that event. On the men's side, the relay team consisted of junior Duncan Bonney, junior Wil Cushman, freshman Wil Barton, and junior Drew Priede. Their time of 6:41.76 was over 16 seconds faster than second-place Centre, broke the school record by seven seconds, and ranks fifth on the national performance list. Both of BSC's 'B' teams also won the 800 free relay this evening. The women (freshman Sarah Catherine Murphy, sophomore Erica Dekle, sophomore Jordan Ames, and freshman Emma Gladstone) recorded a time of 7:58.79, while the men (junior Matt Gonzalez, freshman Andrew Maley, sophomore Sam Cook, and senior David Lutomski) recorded a time of 7:01.22.

Action continues tomorrow at 10 a.m. with the preliminaries of the 200 freestyle relay, 500 freestyle, 200 IM, 50 freestyle, 400 medley relay, and 1-meter diving. Finals will begin at 6 p.m. The meet also continues through Friday and Saturday.
