Swimming and Diving opens season with wins against Centre

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The Birmingham-Southern swimming and diving teams kicked off the 2015-16 season with wins against Centre College on Friday at the Birmingham CrossPlex.

The women won 145-85, and the men won 158-64, with combined team scores of 303-149.

For the women, senior diver Abby Sims broke the 1-meter 6-dive program record with a score of 198.53. On the men's side, senior Drew Priede won two events, the 1,000-yard freestyle and 100-yard freestyle, and sophomore Stone Strankman won both the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard breaststroke.

The Panthers return to action after the men won the 2015 Southern Athletic Association championship and sent four swimmers to the NCAA Championship, earning All-American honors in the process. The women placed second at the SAA Championship last year after winning the 2014 title.

BSC travels to Atlanta next weekend to face Emory on Saturday, Oct. 24, at 1 p.m. ET.
