CLEVELAND, Miss.—After the first day of the Delta State University Christmas Invitational, the Birmingham-Southern women's swimming and diving team is in third place and the men are in fourth.
The Panthers are the only Division III team competing in the meet. Lindenwood, whose men are ranked 26th and women 45th in the nation in Division II, lead the team standings on both sides.
Senior Drew Priede achieved an NCAA 'B' cut time in the 500-yard freestyle today with a time of 4:32.54, placing fifth, followed by senior Wil Cushman at sixth with a time of 4:37.53. Other highlights for the men included freshman R.J. Clark finishing seventh in the 1-meter diving, the 200-yard freestyle relay team (consisting of sophomore Luke Huffstutler, Cushman, Priede, and junior Scott Taylor) placing seventh with a time of 1:26.55), and the 200-yard medley relay team (Taylor, sophomore Caleb Riggs, Huffstutler, and senior Andrew Maley) placing ninth with a time of 1:37.92. Taylor was also 13th in the 200-yard IM, and senior Matt Gonzalez was 14th in the 50-yard freestyle.
For the women, the 200-yard freestyle relay team (senior Kristen Stempak, freshman Chelsea Chamblee, freshman Katherine Odle, and senior Molly Waddell) finished third with a time of 1:38.52, and the 200-yard medley relay team (freshman Kayla Canon, senior Peyton Langley, Chamblee, and Odle) finished fifth with a time of 1:50.50. Chamblee was also fifth in the 50-yard freestyle, sophomore Katie Miller was 10th in the 200-yard IM, and sophomore Sarah Catherine Murphy was 14th in the 500-yard freestyle.
Action in the Invitational continues tomorrow through Monday at the DSU Aquatics Center.
