ROME, Ga.—The Birmingham-Southern swimming and diving teams traveled to a snowy Rome, Ga., on Friday and Saturday and won the 2016 Berry Viking Classic.
The women scored 494 points, defeating Savannah College of Art and Design, Berry, Converse College, South Georgia State, and Point University. The men had 635.5 points and finished ahead of Berry, South Georgia State, SCAD, and Point.
For the women, freshman Heather Heacock won the 100- and 200-yard backstroke, and freshman Chelsea Chamblee was second in the 50-yard freestyle, third in the 100-yard freestyle, and ninth in the 100-yard butterfly. Sophomore Sarah Catherine Murphy finished second in the 1,650-yard freestyle, fourth in the 500-yard freestyle, and 10th in the 200-yard freestyle, junior Erica Dekle was second in the 100-yard backstroke and fourth in the 200-yard IM, and junior Jordan Ames was second in the 400-yard IM.
On the men's side, senior Wil Cushman won the 500-yard freestyle and placed second in the 200-yard freestyle and 1,650-yard freestyle, freshman Justin Staab won the 200-yard butterfly, and sophomore Luke Huffstutler won the 100-yard butterfly. Sophomore Caleb Riggs placed second in the 200-yard breaststroke and third in the 200- and 400-yard IM, and sophomore Wil Barton was second in the 100-yard backstroke and third in the 200-yard backstroke.
The Panthers take a break now before hosting the 2016 Southern Athletic Association Championship, Feb. 10-13 at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
