Men Top Sewanee; Women Split Competition

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern men's swimming and diving team defeated Southern Athletic Association rival Sewanee 178-92, while the women split their day at the Birmingham CrossPlex Friday afternoon. They defeated Sewanee 174-115, but fell to University of West Florida 181-103.


The 200 yard medley team of Scott Taylor (Arab, Ala./Arab HS), Caleb Riggs (Enterprise, Ala./Peninsula HS), Will Retersdorf (Spring Hill, Tenn./Independence HS), and Wil Barton (Memphis, Tenn./St. George's Independent School) won their event by seven seconds at 1:41.


Retersdorf, Barton, Noah Young (Clinton, Miss./Clinton HS), and Zach Leischner (Raleigh, N.C./Garner Magnet HS) then took the 200 freestyle relay in 1:30.


Barton also won the 200 and the 500 free.  Riggs took first in the 100 backstroke, 200 breaststroke, and the 200 IM.  Taylor picked up another win of his own in the 200 backstroke, and Young won the 100-yard backstroke. 


Donnie Gaines (Pace, Fla./Arlington HS) finished first in the 200-yard butterfly.  And Sam Cook (Youngsville, La./St. Thomas More Catholic HS) won the 1,000-yard freestyle.


On the women's side, Chelsea Chamblee (Boaz, Ala./Boaz HS), Katherine Odle (Jasper, Ala./Walker HS), Ramsey Shane (Fairhope, Ala./Fairhope HS), and Erica Dekle (Mobile, Ala./McGill-Toolen Catholic HS) won the 200 freestyle relay in a time of 1:44.60


The Panthers close their home season in a head-to-head meet against Emory University on Saturday, Jan. 14.  It will be senior day for the Panthers as they begin at 10:30 a.m. with the ceremony.
