Panthers Battle Against Top Ranked Emory

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern men's and women's swimming and diving tea­­ms competed well Saturday against Emory University, whose women are the top ranked team in the country and men who are No. 2 after the first half of the season. 


The BSC men fell 155-107 and the women dropped their head-to-head 157-108.  Both earned five first place finishes each.


On the men's side, Chaz Brouillette (Cullman, Ala./Cullman HS) broke school records in the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events to take first place. His score of 273.15 in the 1-meter qualified him for regionals.


Nico Medina (Davie, Fla./American Heritage HS) took first in the 1,000 freestyle and 500 freestyle.  And Wil Barton (Memphis, Tenn./St. George's Independent School) won the 200 backstroke in a time of 2:02.


The women won four individual events and a relay. Madelynn Kraft (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle HS) won the 200 IM, Erica Dekle (Mobile, Ala./McGill-Toolen Catholic HS) took the 200 backstroke, Hannah Sisler (Hendersonville, Tenn./Merrol Hyde Magnet School) was first in the 200 breaststroke, and Jenna Luth (Pensacola, Fla./Booker T. Washington) won the 500 freestyle.


The relay team of Becca Erwin (Duluth, Ga./Duluth HS), Chelsea Chamblee (Boaz, Ala./Boaz HS), Katherine Odle (Jasper, Ala./Walker HS), and Ramsey Shane (Fairhope, Ala./Fairhope HS) placed first in the 400 freestyle.


The Panthers return to action January 20-21 at the Berry College Invite in Rome, Ga.  It is the last meet before the Southern Athletics Association Championships at the Birmingham CrossPlex February 8-11.
