ROME, Ga. – The Birmingham-Southern men's and women's teams swimming teams closed out the regular season with big wins at the seventh annual Viking Classic. The women defeated four teams including Southern Athletic Association rival Berry College by scoring 727.5 points, to win by over 97 points. The men scored 849, winning by 237 points over Berry, Point University and LaGrange College.
The two teams combined for 16 event wins.
Chelsea Chamblee (Boaz, Ala./Boaz HS), Katherine Odle (Jasper, Ala./Walker HS), Becca Erwin (Duluth, Ga./Duluth HS), and Erica Dekle (Mobile, Ala./McGill-Toolen Catholic HS) won the 200 freestyle relay.
Erwin went on to also win the 50 free, 100 free, and 100 breaststroke. Dekle took the 200 backstroke, and Jenna Luth (Pensacola, Fla./Booker T. Washington) placed first in the 1650 free.
On the men's side, Wil Barton (Memphis, Tenn./St. George's Independent School), Tristan Sumpter (Duluth, Ga./Peachtree Ridge HS), Justin Staab (Raleigh, N.C./Millbrook HS), and Scott Taylor (Arab, Ala./Arab HS) took first in the 800 freestyle relay.
Barton also won the 1650 free and Sumpter won the 200 backstroke.
Nico Medina (Davie, Fla./American Heritage HS) had a big weekend in the pool. He won the 200 butterfly, 200 free, and 500 free. Caleb Riggs (Enterprise, Ala./Peninsula HS) picked up two wins of his own in the 200 IM and 200 breaststroke.
This was the Panthers last meet before the Southern Athletics Association Championships at the Birmingham CrossPlex. The women will chase the title February 8-11 while the men defend theirs.
