BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern men's and women's swimming and diving teams extended their first place leads in the Southern Athletic Association Championships Friday night at the Birmingham CrossPlex. The Panthers combined for 10 top three finishes, including three championships to remain in first after day three of competition. The women are ahead of Rhodes College by 41 points, and the men lead Centre College by over 184 points.
The men went 1-2 in both the 400 IM and 200 freestyle. Luke Huffstutler (Odenville, Ala./Heritage Christian Academy) picked up another gold medal by winning the 400 IM in 4:05, shaving five seconds off his prelim time. Brady Coleman (Denham Springs, La./Denham Springs HS) finished in second just behind him at 4:06.
The 200 medley relay team of Young, Riggs, Huffstutler and Will Retersdorf (Spring Hill, Tenn./Independence HS) earned the silver medal, touching in in 1:36.
On the women's side, Becca Erwin (Duluth, Ga./Duluth HS) earned another gold medal. She finished first in the 100 breaststroke ahead of the Rhodes swimmer by 0.31 seconds.
The BSC men head into the final day of competition with 672 points, with Centre in second at 487.5 points, and Rhodes in third place with 383.5 points. The women now have 583 points, with Rhodes in second with 542, and Centre in third with 517 points.
The final day of the championships is tomorrow. Prelims begin at 10 a.m. with finals starting at 6 p.m.
