BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern men's swimming and diving team dominated competition this week at the 2017 Southern Athletic Association Championships to win their third consecutive league title. The Panthers set a new SAA team points record with 1.013.5, which was 271 points ahead of second place finisher Centre College.
Chaz Brouillette (Cullman, Ala./Cullman HS) was named SAA Diver of the Year after winning both the 1-meter and 3-meter events. And Nico Medina (Davie, Fla./American Heritage HS) earned the SAA Newcomer of the Year award. He won the 200 and 500 freestyle championships and was a part of the championship 800 freestyle relay team. Medina earned 125 points throughout the championships.
The Panthers won three more titles on day four to help secure the victory. Wil Barton (Memphis, Tenn./St. George's Independent School) won the 1650 free, Noah Young (Clinton, Miss./Clinton HS) became the 100 freestyle champion, and Brady Coleman (Denham Springs, La./Denham Springs HS) took the 200 breaststroke championship.
Justin Staab (Raleigh, N.C./Millbrook HS) earned silver in the 200 butterfly and bronze in the 1650 free. And the Panthers went 2-3 in the 200 backstroke with Tristan Sumpter (Duluth, Ga./Peachtree Ridge HS) getting the silver medal and Scott Taylor (Arab, Ala./Arab HS) earning the bronze.
BSC had averaged 954 team points over the past two championships they won. Medina had an NCAA B cut time in the 500 freestyle.
