BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern men's swimming and diving team swept Rhodes College and Berry College while the women split at BSC's home-opening meet of the season at the Birmingham CrossPlex on Saturday.
The men defeated Rhodes and Berry 186-48 and 177-56, respectively. The Panthers had 10 first-place finishes overall. Freshman Max Stoneking (Olathe, Kan./Olathe South HS) placed first in the 1000-yard freestyle, finishing in10:14.46. Sophomore Nico Medina (Hollywood, Fla./American Heritage HS) finished first in two events, the 500-yard freestyle and the 200-yard freestyle.
Freshman Patrick Dunne (Mobile, Ala./McGill-Toolen Catholic HS) and senior Caleb Riggs (Mesa, Ariz./Peninsula HS) also had wins in the 200-yard IM and the 200-yard breast stroke, respectively. Dunne also had a first-place result in the 200-yard back stroke with a time of 1:55.06.
Sophomore Matt Lovell (Pelham, Ala./Spain Park HS) had two diving victories in the 1-meter and 3 meter. BSC added two more top finishes in 400-yard free relay and the 400-yard medley relay.
On the women's side, the Panthers defeated Berry College 135-105 but fell to Rhodes 135-104.
The women took first in two events on Saturday. Junior Chelsea Chamblee (Boaz, Ala./Boaz HS) won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.81 while Maddie Hosick (Lee's Summit, Mo./Lee's Summit West HS), Savannah Barber (St. Petersburg, Fla./Northside Christian HS), Mary Beth Ronne (Athens, Tenn./McMinn County HS) and Chamblee teamed up to win the 400-yard freestyle relay.
Birmingham-Southern's next meet will be against Emory University on Saturday, Oct. 21.
