INDIANAPOLIS – The Birmingham-Southern men's and women's swimming and diving teams competed at the 2017 House of Champions event this weekend, putting forward tremendous individual and team performances.
The House of Champions invitational started on Friday, Nov. 17 with 14 different programs, including a number of Division I teams. The competition ended on Sunday, Nov. 19 with the BSC men finishing 10th with 352 points and the women placing 11th with 277 points.
On the men's side, three program records were broken over the course of the three-day meet. On Friday, the Panthers set a new school record in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:25.43. Freshman Patrick Dunne (Mobile, Ala./McGill-Toolen Catholic HS), senior Luke Huffstutler (Odenville, Ala./Heritage Christian Academy), freshman Ryan Emili (Anchorage, Alaska/South Anchorage HS) and sophomore Noah Young (Clinton, Miss./Clinton HS) were the four members of the record-setting relay team.
Newcomer Dunne's record-setting weekend was not over after the relay, however. On Saturday, he would go on to break the BSC 400-yard IM record in the preliminaries with a time of 3:59.53. He placed sixth in the event finals. On Sunday, he broke the program 200-yard backstroke record twice, first in the preliminaries and then again in the finals. In the prelims, Dunne posted a time of 1:50.91 and followed it up with the new record time of 1:50.32 in the finals. He finished sixth in the 200-yard backstroke event.
Other notables were Noah Young and Nico Medina (Hollywood, Fla./American Heritage HS). On Friday, Young placed earned an automatic cut time of 1:50.89 in the 200-yard IM prelims before finishing seventh in the finals with a time of 1:53.38. Medina placed ninth in the 500-yard freestyle on Friday with a finals time of 4:32.28.
The House of Champions meet was Erwin's first of the season, but the sophomore earned an "A" cut time of 1:05.73 in the 100-yard breaststroke and a finals time of 1:05.50 to place sixth in the event. Erwin also recorded a "B" cut time of 24.02 in the 50-yard freestyle prelims before placing 13th in the finals with a time of 24.04.
In the 1650-yard freestyle finals, Barber was BSC's top finisher, placing ninth with a time of 17:52.32. The freshman also earned a "B" cut time of 5:09.51 in the 500-yard freestyle prelims before placing 15th in the event with a finals time of 5:10.33. Both Erwin and Barber competed in numerous relay events for the Panthers, as well.
Another notable was junior Kayla Canon (Arnold, Md./Blue Springs South HS), who earned a "B" cut time of 2:29.94 in the 200-yard breaststroke before placing 20th overall in the event final with a mark of 2:29.95.
The House of Champions was the BSC swimming and diving team's last event of 2017. The Panthers will resume their season in January. Birmingham-Southern will host the first meet of 2018 when Hendrix makes a visit to the Birmingham CrossPlex on Saturday, Jan. 13.
