Swimming and Diving Sweeps Berry in Home Meet

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern men's and women's swimming and diving teams swept Berry College in competition at the Birmingham Crossplex on Saturday morning.

The men's team defeated the Vikings 157.5 to 118.5 while the women came out on top 174-113.

Combined, the Panthers took first place in 20 of the 32 total events.

Birmingham-Southern got the meet off to a good start, winning both the men's and women's 200-yard medley relays with times of 1:38.53 and 1:53.48, respectively.

Then, in the third event of the day, junior Becca Erwin (Duluth, Ga./Duluth HS) set a new program in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:36.01, beating the previous record of 10:38.82.

Erwin now holds the BSC record in six different individual events and is a part of three other program record-owning relay teams.

She would go on later to win another event, the 200-yard breaststroke, with a time of 2:26.31.

Other swimming event winners on the women's side were Kasey Godwin (Jefferson City, Tenn./Jefferson County HS), Anna Jordan Luth (Pensacola, Fla./Booker T. Washington HS), Katherine Pepe (Sarasota, Fla./Cardinal Mooney HS), Annalane Lee (Orange Beach, Ala./Gulf Shores HS) and Mary Katherine Stewart (Daphne, Ala./Daphne HS).

On the men's side, senior Justin Staab (Raleigh, N.C./Millbrook HS) earned multiple first-place finishes in the meet. He captured first in the 1000-yard freestyle with a mark of 10:15.81, and then went on to win the 500-yard freestyle event with a time of 5:00.28.

Other men's swimming winners were Hayden Henderson (Tupelo, Miss./Tupelo HS), Christopher Nett (Nacogdoches, Texas/Nacogdoches HS), Nico Medina (Hollywood, Fla./American Heritage HS), Jackson Algiers (Daphne, Ala./McGill-Toolen Catholic HS) and Ryan Emili (Anchorage, Alaska/South Anchorage HS).

Freshman James Hughes (Huntsville, Ala./Grissom HS) and junior Eleni Heller (Northville, Mich./Northville HS) captured all of their respective diving events.

Hughes won both men's one-meter diving competitions with scores of 169.50 and 287.77; Heller won both women's one-meter diving events with her scores of 123.52 and 136.13.

Birmingham-Southern returns to the Birmingham Crossplex for its next meet on Friday, Jan. 25 against Sewanee. The Panthers will host Trinity University the following day, Saturday, Jan. 26, which will serve as Senior Day.
