BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern men's and women's swimming and diving teams both finished day two of the Southern Athletic Association Championships in first place on Thursday.
After 12 total events, the BSC women lead the field with field with 310 points, while the Panther men are on top with 321.5 points.
On the women's side, Birmingham-Southern were crowned champions in three events on Thursday. The Panthers picked up wins in two relays, the 200-yard freestyle relay and the 400-yard medley relay.
BSC finished the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3:53.29. The 200-yard freestyle relay team – consisting of Chelsea Chamblee (Boaz, Ala./Boaz HS), Mary Beth Ronne (Athens, Tenn./McMinn County HS), Mary Katherine Stewart (Daphne, Ala./Daphne HS) and Becca Erwin (Duluth, Ga./Duluth HS) – set a new SAA and program record in the event with a time of 1:35.67.
Individually, Erwin was the champion in the 500-yard freestyle with an invite time of 4:49.51. The time also broke her own SAA and BSC record in the event.
On the men's side, diver James Hughes (Huntsville, Ala./Grissom HS) won the one-meter diving competition with a score of 517.3. The score set a new SAA and BSC record.
Nico Medina (Hollywood, Fla./American Heritage HS) was BSC's other individual champion, taking first in the 500-yard freestyle. Medina's time of 4:33.57 was fast enough to beat the B-cut time of 4:33.75.
The Panther men also took first place in the 400-yard medley relay. The relay team of Medina, Hayden Henderson (Tupelo, Miss./Tupelo HS), Wil Retersdorf (Spring Hill, Tenn./Independence HS) and Ryan Emili (Anchorage, Alaska/South Anchorage HS) finished the race in 3:24.76, setting a new conference and program record.
After Thursday's performance, the Birmingham-Southern men jumped into first place, up from second place after the end of Wednesday's finals.
The Panthers will return to the pool on Friday for the morning preliminary heats starting at 10 a.m. at the Birmingham Crossplex.
