|Title:||Head Swimming & Diving Coach|
Former University of Evansville Head Coach Toby Wilcox was hired to lead Birmingham-Southern's new men's and women's swimming and diving programs on August 24, 2011.
Wilcox was Head Coach at NCAA Division I Evansville for nine seasons, from 1988-1997, and was named Midwestern Collegiate Conference (MCC) Coach of the Year three times (1990, 1991, 1995) during his tenure. He coached the first swimmer to achieve "B" standard at Evansville, and both his men's and women's teams maintained grade-point averages over 3.00. Wilcox coached 24 athletes to individual conference titles, and three MCC Swimmers of the Year.
Wilcox has been the head swimming and diving coach at North High School in Evansville, Ind., since August 2009. He coached the school's first regional diving competitor as well as the first state qualifier, and 21 of his student-athletes made the All-City Academic Team during the 2010-11 season. Wilcox's teams also broke 18 school records last season alone, and broke 30 school records total over the past two years.
Prior to his stint as head coach, Wilcox served as Evansville's Assistant Swim Coach from 1986 to 1988. He was also head swim coach for the University of Evansville Aquatic Club from 1984-1993, working with athletes from ages 6-18. Wilcox coached his athletes to the Indiana State age group team long course championship in 1985, and four swimmers from the club went on to become Olympic time trial participants. He also helped to develop two Junior National swimmers during his time with the club.
Wilcox is a University of Evansville graduate, where he attended on a swimming scholarship and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in History in 1985. He was MCC and Heartland Collegiate Conference MVP in 1984, team MVP in 1983 and 1984, and served as team captain.
"We are very excited to have someone with the experience and credentials of Toby Wilcox to start and build our new swimming and diving programs," Athletics Director Joe Dean, Jr., said. "Toby is a very personable and energetic coach with a passion for swimming and diving, and will be an asset to our athletics program here at Birmingham-Southern."
Wilcox began his duties on Sept. 15, 2011, and will spend the 2011-12 season recruiting student-athletes to the new program, which will begin competition in 2012-13. The team will utilize the new Birmingham Metro CrossPlex facility, just minutes from campus, which features an Olympic-caliber pool and state-of-the-art facilities for both training and hosting meets.
