BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Birmingham-Southern hosted the 2011 'Southern Track & Field Invitational today at Panther Stadium.

Several Alabama schools competed today and were successful, with UAB, Samford, and Troy getting several top finishes.


Top finishes for Birmingham-Southern included a second-place finish by sophomore Robert Willett in the men's 800-meter run with a meet record and personal best time of 1:53.33, as well as a third-place finish by sophomore Shelby Moore in the women's javelin with a distance of 37.30 meters.

Freshman Trent Blumenthal also placed fifth in the 800m with a time of 2:01.31, and freshman Hank Ballard was eighth in the javelin with a distance of 50.62m.

For the women, freshman Tiarra Goode placed sixth in the 400m dash with a time of 59.56, junior Sarah Sharman was eighth in the high jump with a height of 1.47m, and senior Mary Elaine Williamson was 10th in the 1500m with a time of 4:57.49.

"Hosting the third annual 'Southern Invitational was a great way to start off our outdoor season," BSC Head Coach Kenneth Cox said. "We had some good performances by some of our leaders on the team, and we are excited about the rest of the season. I am especially proud of the competitive way that Robert Willett opened up and was determined to start his season off by setting a personal record of 1:53.33 in the 800-meter and breaking the meet record at the same time!"

The Panthers travel to Atlanta next weekend for the Emory Invitational.
