BSC’s Willett Receives USTFCCCA Region Honor

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Senior Robert Willett has been honored as the 2013 USTFCCA South/Southeast Region Division III Track Athlete of the Year according to the USTFCCA website on Wednesday.   

The award marks the second straight year that a BSC Track Athlete with Tiarra Goode taking the honor in 2012.

"What a great award for Robert!" BSC Head Track and Field Coach Kenneth Cox said. "It's very fitting for a young man that has committed himself to improving each of the last four years here on the Hilltop."

Willett will compete in the NCAA Divsion III Championships as the No. 2 seed in the 800 meters (1:51.76), which begin Friday in Kenosha, Wis. He has not been defeated by Division III competition in seven races at 800 meters or farther this season.  Willett's qualifying time of 1:51.7 was a career-best and will be competing in the DIII Indoor Track and Field Championships for the second consecutive year, starting Friday.

Willett, who recently earned USTFCCCA Division III Cross Country All-Academic honors, had a banner season for the Panthers in cross country. The Mobile, Ala., native garnered First-Team All-Southern Athletic Association honors, finishing second in the SAA Cross Country Championships, and he finished 17th at the NCAA South Regional to earn All-Region honors.  During the regular season, Willett won the Montevallo Early Bird and the Tiger Twilight race and took home third place in the Coach "O" Invitational at Troy University.
