MOBILE, Ala.—The Birmingham-Southern outdoor track and field teams had several impressive performances, including four top-five finishes Saturday at the South Alabama Invitational in Mobile, Ala.
In a meet featuring several NCAA Division I teams, including the host Jaguars, junior Hank Ballard placed second in the men's javelin throw with a distance of 59.98 meters. On the women's side, freshman Elise Pittman was second in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 5:00.36, freshman Sage Jordan was fourth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:01.25, and freshman Emory Builta was fifth in the discus throw with a toss of 38.83 meters.
"We had some strong performances from a number of our athletes today," Head Coach Kenneth Cox said. "I am excited about the progress that we are making within our team and the way in which our young athletes are coming into their own. With two weeks left in our season and next Friday being our final regular season meet, we are starting to see improvements all around."
The Panthers travel to Sewanee, Tenn., next Friday, April 18, for the Mountain Laurel Invitational. BSC will then travel to Conway, Ark., for the 2014 Southern Athletic Association Championship, hosted by Hendrix College April 25-26.
