BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern men's indoor track and field team competed tough at the UAB Vulcan Invite Saturday at the Birmingham CrossPlex. Despite being one of two NCAA Division III programs to participate in the meet, the Panthers earned five top 15 finishes, including three top three performances.
"I am very pleased with the way our men competed today," said Head Coach Kenneth Cox. "Everyone came out focused and ready to make the most of the opportunity to line up against a talented field of athletes."
Jamal Watkins (Hampton, Ga./Dodge City CC) placed second in the 60m dash. His time of 6.79 is the fastest in Division III this season. He also placed 13th in the 200 with new personal record time of 22.09 that is the sixth fastest Division III.
Kameren Morgan (Bowie, Md./St. Alban's School for Boys) and David Campbell (Semmes, Ala./Murphy HS) finished third in their respective events. Morgan threw a person record 16.61m in the weight throw for the sixth ranked distance in Division III. Campbell set a new PR in the pole vault at 4.25m.
Joseph Smith (Montgomery, Texas/Montgomery HS) also competed well in the weight throw. He finished 13th with a personal record mark of 13.40m. Smith went on to place 22nd in the shotput with another PR of 11.23m.
"We had a number of strong early season performances and it's always encouraging to have some personal records at a cross divisional meet," added Cox. "Our athletes are looking forward to building on these performances in training and future competitions."
The Panthers return to action on Sunday, Jan. 22. They return to the Birmingham CrossPlex for the Emory Indoor Invitational.
