BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern women's track and field team won the BSC 'Southern Indoor Challenge Monday, outscoring the second place finisher by 45 points. The men tied for third as the teams combined for eight first place finishes.
"This was a great meet," said Head Coach Kenneth Cox. "I am proud of the performances we were able to deliver today. It was nice to see our athletes being tested at this point in the indoor season. Our leaders worked hard to set the tone for our entire team. And as we get everyone together for the outdoor season, we have a lot of work left to do."
Karmin Shute (Fayetteville, Ga./The Walker School) set two new personal records to win both the 60m and 200m dashes. Her time of 7.73 seconds in the 60 is the fourth fastest run this year. After finishing the 200 in 25.28 seconds, she now owns the ninth fastest time this season in the nation. She was also a member of the 4x400m relay team that ran a season-best 4:14.16 to take first place. With Shute on the relay was Rebecca Bryant (Decatur, Ga./Marist School), Taylor Eady (Cullman, Ala./West Point HS), and Taylor Trotman (Birmingham, Ala./Vestavia Hills HS).
In the field, Alexus Lindsey (Holly Pond, Ala./Fairview HS) took first place in the pole vault after tying her career-best mark of 3.20m. And Madelyn Nicastro (Huntsville, Ala./Grissom HS) won the triple jump with a distance of 10.37m.
On the men's side, Jamal Watkins (Hampton, Ga./Dodge City CC) finished first in the 60m and 200m dashes. He set a new personal record in the 200m, finishing in 21.94 seconds. He was also only 0.01 seconds off his personal record in the 60 as well. Watkins currently owns the second fastest 60m time in the country.
Kameren Morgan (Bowie, Md./St. Alban's School for Boys) continues to shatter records in the weight throw. He earned first place after throwing a personal and school record 17.86m. The mark is the 16th furthest in the country this season.
BSC continues action this Saturday as they head to the Sewanee Indoor Invitation. The Panthers are preparing to host the 2018 NCAA Division III Indoor National Championships March 9-10 at the CrossPlex.
