BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern women’s basketball team pulled out of their recent tail-spin tonight, defeating the visiting Pirates of Southwestern University, 66-58. The win snapped a five game losing streak for the Panthers dating back to their overtime loss to Sewanee on January 2nd.
The Panthers led for much of the half, and when they trailed it was never more than two points. Both teams shot similar percentages, but the Panthers hit two more three’s than the Pirates, giving them the early edge. BSC netted 11 second-chance points thanks to a 22-15 rebounding margin. BSC held a 29-26 lead at the break. #Courtney Gibson# had an impressive 16 minutes, posting 12 of the Panthers’ 29 in the half.
The game continued to be tight for the first minutes of the new half, and then the Panthers’ offense woke up. A three from Katelyn Wilson sparked a 19-4 run over the next five minutes that brought ‘Southern from down one, 44-43, to up 14, 62-48. The Panthers hit four three’s over the stretch including two back-to-back from Courtney Gibson, during the run. The Panther defense stiffened as well, holding the Pirates to just one field goal in the five minutes. From there all the Panthers had to do was hold on until the clock ran out. BSC took the win, 66-58.
Courtney Gibson led the Panthers with 24 points on the night, but #Danielle Harbor#’s line was balanced from one end of the court to the other. The senior guard had nine points, nine rebounds, seven assists, and seven steals for the game, including some crucial swipes during the run that put the game away for BSC.
The Panthers will take their newly-minted momentum on the road next weekend for their longest road-trip of the year. BSC will fly out to Sherman, Texas on Thursday for a Friday night meeting with Austin College Roos before moving on to Colorado Springs on Sunday to take on the Colorado College Tigers. Game times are scheduled for 8:00 p.m. on Friday and 3:00 p.m. on Sunday (All times Central).
