No. 9 Oglethorpe defeats Panther women, 79-61
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern women’s basketball team fell to No. 9 Oglethorpe University, 79-61, at home Sunday afternoon. Oglethorpe moves to 11-1 on the season, while the Panthers fall to 8-4.
OU quickly jumped out to a 6-0 lead to start the game and would never trail, leading by as much as eight, twice. The Panthers were able to cut it to two, 27-25, at the 5:13 mark, but the Stormy Petrels took a five-point 36-31 lead into halftime.
Oglethorpe used a 16-2 run in the second half to go up by 19, 52-33, and kept a double-digit lead for the duration, going up by as much as 25, 79-54, at the 2:11 mark before winning by 18.
Freshman Sam Davidson led the Panthers with 13 points, and senior Elyse Clay led with a game-high seven rebounds.
Chelsea MacDonald led Oglethorpe with 14 points, followed by Tina Grace with 12 and Katie Kulavic and Anna Findley with 11 apiece. Kulavic and Findley also led with four assists each. Reginita Howell also led OU with six rebounds and three blocks.
BSC shot 39.6 percent (19-of-48) for the game, going 46.7 percent (7-of-15) on three-pointers and 69.6 percent (16-of-23) at the free throw line. OU was 44.4 percent (28-of-63) from the field, 47.6 percent (10-of-21) from beyond the arc, and 86.7 percent (13-of-15) at the line.
BSC out-rebounded OU, 39-30, but committed 32 turnovers to OU’s 20.
The Panthers are on the road next weekend for more Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference action, traveling to face DePauw University, Friday, Jan. 9, at 8 p.m. ET, and Centre College, Sunday, Jan. 11, at 3 p.m. ET.
