BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Featuring 14 home games, the 2008-09 Birmingham-Southern women’s basketball schedule was announced today by head coach Brad Hodge and assistant coach Rena Faust-Holden.
The Panthers open the season at home on Nov. 15, facing Rust College at 4 p.m. Other non-conference home highlights include Louisiana College, Huntingdon College, Maryville College, and Emory University.
BSC will take part in the Coca-Cola/Huntingdon Classic, Nov. 21-22, facing Rust and Judson College in Montgomery, Ala., and the Panthers open Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play on Nov. 25 at home against Rhodes College. BSC’s last home game of the season is Feb. 8 against Centre College, after which the Panthers wrap up the season with three straight road games.
“We are excited about this upcoming season and the challenges that our schedule presents this team,” Hodge said. “After having to take on the difficult task of 16 road games last season, we are glad to have the opportunity for Louisiana College, Maryville College, and Emory University to each come to Bill Battle Coliseum for outstanding match-ups here in front of our students and supporters. We are pleased to develop the series with Huntingdon and also at having them to invite us to their Coca-Cola Classic this season. The classic will hopefully become an event that can grow into a great event that each program will host on alternate years.
“All of the non-conference games will prepare us for another very competitive season in SCAC play,” Hodge continued. “Having three teams in the NCAA tournament (DePauw, Oglethorpe, and Trinity), and both our division participants making it to the Elite Eight last season demonstrates the true strength of our league. Therefore, it was vital for us to have the schedule that requires us to be competitive as early as possible. We are anxious to get started and eagerly await the opening contest on our campus versus Rust College on November 15.”
