Women’s Basketball opens season with 82-47 win over Oakwood

The Birmingham-Southern women’s basketball team opened the 2009-10 season with a big win Monday night, defeating Oakwood University, 82-47, in Bill Battle Coliseum. BSC is now 1-0 on the season, while the Lady Ambassadors fall to 1-6.

The Panthers jumped out to an 11-0 lead to open the game and led by as much as 23, three times in the first half. BSC led 36-19 at the half, led by freshman Melanie Short with eight points and freshman Caroline King with four rebounds. Kim Pointer led the Lady Ambassadors with eight points in the first half, and Krystal Bean led with seven first-half rebounds.

Oakwood came out and scored nine straight to open the second half, cutting the lead to 12, 36-28, but the Panthers kept shooting and quickly jumped back out to a large lead, expanding the advantage to 29, 63-34, before eventually winning 82-47.

Freshman Stephanie Stanley led the Panthers with 11 points, followed by Short with 10. Junior Jamie Key and sophomore Laura Kneiss led with six rebounds each. Stanley and King led with three assists apiece, and Stanley and Key led with four steals each.

Oakwood’s Courtney White led all players with 16 points, followed by Pointer with 15. White also pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds and posted three blocks, and Pointer led Oakwood with three assists. Christine Hairston led with three steals.

BSC shot 37 percent (30-of-81) from the field, 17.2 percent (5-of-29) from three-point range, and 58.6 percent (17-of-29) at the free throw line. Oakwood shot 32.7 percent (17-of-52) overall, 33.3 percent (1-of-3) on three-pointers, and 48 percent (12-of-25) at the line.

The Panthers out-rebounded the Lady Ambassadors, 41-46, while committing 19 turnovers to Oakwood’s 43.

BSC is at home again this weekend, hosting the Sheraton Birmingham Classic. The Panthers take on East Texas Baptist University, Friday, at 6 p.m., followed by a game between Huntingdon College and Rust College. On Saturday, East Texas Baptist and Huntingdon face off at 2 p.m., followed by BSC versus Rust at 4 p.m., all in Bill Battle Coliseum.
