JACKSON, Miss.—The Birmingham-Southern basketball team moved to 12-5 overall and 7-1 in SCAC play this evening with a 63-46 win against Millsaps College in Jackson, Miss. The Majors fell to 6-10 overall and 3-5 in conference play.
Play was close in the opening minutes of the game as the teams were tied three times in the first seven minutes before BSC took over the lead for good at the 13-minute mark, 11-9, on a layup by sophomore Erin Moore.
The Panthers led by as much as nine in the first half before the Majors cut it to two, 24-22, at the half. BSC came out shooting in the second half, scoring the first six points to go back up by eight. The Panthers slowly increased their lead for the duration of the game and came away with the eventual 17-point victory.
Moore and sophomore Melanie Short led with nine points each, junior Ashton Spurgin led with nine rebounds, and junior Kristian Moody led with two assists.
BSC out-shot Millsaps overall from the field, 46 to 32 percent, but the Majors shot 35.7 percent from three-point range while the Panthers shot only 26.7 percent. BSC also struggled at the free throw line, hitting 13-of-23 for 56.5 percent; Millsaps shot 69.2 percent (9-of-13) from the line.
The Panthers out-rebounded the Majors, 40-28, and also committed more turnovers with 15 to Millsaps' 12.
BSC stays on the road for its next game, traveling to Conway, Ark., to take on Hendrix College this Sunday at 1 p.m.
