BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Senior Katelyn Wilson led the Birmingham-Southern women’s basketball team with 13 points in the team’s 74-50 win against Oglethorpe, Sunday afternoon in Bill Battle Coliseum.
The Panthers move to 8-4 overall and 3-1 in SCAC action; the Stormy Petrels fall to 3-8 overall and 2-1 in the SCAC.
BSC jumped out to a 6-0 lead to open the game, courtesy of three-pointers by junior Kristian Moody and Wilson, but Oglethorpe came back and took over the lead at the 15:15 mark. The Petrels led for most of the remainder of the half, going up by as much as 12, 34-22, with 3:28 left in the half, but the Panthers scored nine straight points to end the half only trailing by three, 34-31.
A three-pointer from Moody to open the second half tied things up, and a jumper by Wilson at the 17:54 mark put BSC back in the lead, this time for good. The Panthers kept a comfortable lead for the next few minutes, and then pulled away down the stretch to the eventual 24-point win.
Wilson led with 13 points, while sophomore Alex Adams had 10 points. Adams and junior Ashton Spurgin led with seven rebounds apiece, and Moody led with three assists. BSC shot 41.9 percent (26-of-62) from the field, 40 percent (8-of-20) from three-point range, and 73.7 percent (14-of-19) at the free throw line.
Sarah Giles led Oglethorpe with 14 points and 11 rebounds, and Katie Weeks also recorded 10 points. The Petrels shot 32.8 percent (19-of-58) overall, 22.2 percent (4-of-18) from beyond the arc, and 80 percent (8-of-10) at the line.
BSC out-rebounded OU, 46-34, while committing 15 turnovers to the Petrels’ 17.
The Panthers are on the road this Wednesday, Jan. 5, traveling east to take on Berry College in Mount Berry, Ga., at 6 p.m. ET.
