BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—On the second day of the 2010 Sheraton Birmingham Classic, the Birmingham-Southern women’s basketball team defeated Rust College, 65-47, to open the season 2-0.
Louisiana College and Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology also faced off earlier today, with LC winning 78-54.
Sophomore Alex Adams led all players with 18 points, going 8-of-9 from the floor. Junior Sam Davidson also recorded 14 points on 5-of-6 shooting, and sophomore Erin Moore posted 12 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Junior newcomer Kristian Moody led with five assists.
Rust scored the first basket of the game, but the Panthers quickly tied things up and took the lead, going up by as much as nine, 18-9, at the 11:10 mark. But the Lady Bearcats chipped away at the lead, tying things up, 21-21, with 1:31 left in the half, and scoring with 45 seconds left to take a 23-21 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The Lady Bearcats hit a three-pointer to open the second half and go up by five for their largest lead of the day, but BSC responded with 14 straight points before the 16:49 mark to go up 35-26. Rust scored a layup to cut it to seven, but the Panthers went on another run, scoring 15 straight points to go up 50-28 at the 11:03 mark. BSC hung onto the large lead, going up by as much as 27 before winning by 18.
Al’lisha Hudson led the Lady Bearcats with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Rust shot 30.5 percent (18-of-59) from the field, 28 percent (7-of-25) from three-point range, and 44.4 percent (4-of-9) at the free throw line.
BSC shot 46.3 percent (25-of-54) from the field, including a 68-percent showing (17-of-25) in the second half, and 35.3 percent (6-of-17) from beyond the arc. The Panthers were also 60 percent (9-of-15) from the line.
BSC out-rebounded Rust, 65-47, and both teams committed 21 turnovers.
The Panthers are on the road this Tuesday, traveling to face Troy University at 7 p.m. in Troy, Ala.
