East Texas Baptist comes from behind to defeat Panthers, 64-60

The Birmingham-Southern College women's basketball team lost on the road today to East Texas Baptist University, 64-60. The Panthers fall to 5-3, while ETBU moves to 3-5.

Junior Ashton Spurgin and sophomore Alex Adams led BSC with 16 points each, and Spurgin led with nine rebounds. Junior Kristian Moody led with six assists, and sophomore Melanie Short had two blocks.

ETBU held a small lead for the first five minutes of the game before the Panthers took over, leading by as much as 13 before taking a 32-22 lead into halftime.

After the 18:40 mark of the second half, the Tigers put together a 14-2 run to cut the Panthers' lead to one, 39-38, and the teams traded baskets after that several times before ETBU took over the lead for good with 12:43 left in the game. Although BSC stayed close on the Tigers' heels, they were unable to get back the lead, eventually losing by four, 64-60.

The Panthers out-shot the Tigers, 43.1 percent (22-of-51) from the field to ETBU's 35.5 percent (22-of-62), 63.6 percent (7-of-11) from three-point range to ETBU's 28.6 percent (2-of-7). The teams were even, both shooting 64.3 percent, from the free throw line, although BSC was 9-of-14 and ETBU was 18-of-28. The Tigers out-rebounded BSC, 42-37, and the Panthers turned it over 16 times, six more than ETBU.

BSC stays in Texas for its next two games, taking on University of Dallas tomorrow at 2 p.m. in Longview, Texas, on the campus of LeTourneau University, and then facing LeTourneau on Monday at noon.
