Panther women lose hard-fought battle with Rhodes, 69-52

MEMPHIS, Tenn.—The Birmingham-Southern women's basketball team lost on the road Sunday afternoon in Memphis to Rhodes College, 69-52.

The Panthers fall to 11-11 overall and 6-7 in the SCAC, while the Lynx move to 16-5 overall and 10-3 in the conference.

The first half was a close race nearly the entire time, but Rhodes led 16-15 at the 8:01 mark and proceeded to score eight unanswered points to go up 24-15 with 4:49 left in the half. BSC responded with five straight points to cut it to four at the 3:46 mark, and the Panthers were able to cut it to three, 29-26, at the 1:28 mark before trailing 33-27 at the half.

Rhodes maintained its modest lead in the first several minutes of the second half as well, and BSC cut it to three, 43-40, with 11:55 left in the game, but that was the closest the Panthers would come. The Lynx scored seven straight points after that to go up by 10, and BSC managed to cut the lead back to four, 50-46, with 8:21 left, but Rhodes, steadily out-paced BSC for the remainder of the game. In the last 4:29, the Lynx out-scored the Panthers 9-2 to come away with the 17-point victory.

Junior Melanie Short led the Panthers with 14 points, nine rebounds, and three assists, followed by senior Kristian Moody with 13 points. Junior Alex Adams also recorded 11 points and eight rebounds.

The Panthers struggled offensively shooting 16-of-50 (.320) from the field and 5-of-23 (.217) from three-point range. BSC fared better at the free throw line, hitting 15-of-18 (.833).

Rhodes shot better from the field, hitting 24-of-58 (.414), but shot 4-of-21 (.190) from long-range and 17-of-26 (.654) from the line.

BSC out-rebounded the Lynx 39-30 but committed 16 turnovers to Rhodes' four.

The Panthers are at home for the remainder of the season, returning to Bill Battle Coliseum next weekend to host Centre, Friday, and Sewanee, Sunday. A match-up with Oglethorpe on Feb. 18 wraps up the regular season before BSC hosts the 2012 SCAC Basketball Championship, Feb. 24-26.
