MEMPHIS, Tenn.—The Birmingham-Southern women's basketball team lost today to Ferrum College, 87-74, on the first day of the Bancorp South Holiday Classic, hosted by Rhodes College in Memphis.
Ferrum moves to 3-0, while BSC falls to 4-5.
The first 12 minutes of play were close as the teams played to seven ties up to the 22-22 mark, after which Ferrum used an 11-2 run to pull up 33-24. Ferrum led by as much as 12, 38-26, with 3:41 left in the half before BSC scored 10 straight to cut it to 38-36 with 15 seconds on the clock. Ferrum was able to hit a three-pointer before time expired, taking a 41-36 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The Ferrum Panthers maintained the lead throughout the second half as well, although BSC cut it to two three times, the last time at the 7:18 mark when a three-pointer by freshman Breanne DeBaets cut it to 64-62. Ferrum pulled back ahead, however, scoring nine straight points to go up 73-62 while BSC shot only 4-12 from the field over the last 7:18 of the game, allowing Ferrum to pull out to as much as a 17-point lead (85-68 with 2:09 left in the game) before winning 87-74.
Sophomore Kelsey Brown led BSC with 20 points and an impressive nine assists, followed by DeBaets with a career-high 15 points off the bench, junior Kayla Ford with 11 points, and sophomore Ashley Curry with 10 points. Sophomore Jane Romano led with six rebounds.
All five of Ferrum's starters scored in double digits, led by Katy Kipps with 17 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
Ferrum out-shot BSC in every category, shooting 48.1 percent (25-52) from the field to BSC's 35.7 percent (25-70), 40 percent (4-10) from three-point range to BSC's 20.6 percent (7-34), and 80.5 percent (33-41) at the free throw line to BSC's 65.4 percent (17-26) performance. BSC held a small advantage in rebounding, 38-36, and both teams turned the ball over 25 times.
BSC is back in action tomorrow in the Classic, taking on Westminster College at 1 p.m. Central.
