DEMOREST, Ga.—Led by senior Kayla Ford with 17 points, the Birmingham-Southern women's basketball team defeated Salem College, 64-56, Tuesday evening at the Cancer Awareness Tournament hosted by Piedmont College in Demorest, Ga.
The Panthers moved to 6-5, while the Spirits fell to 1-6.
Sophomore Breanne DeBaets opened the scoring with five straight points and BSC would never trail, quickly going up 11-3. The Spirits cut it to five twice but the Panthers pulled back ahead before the end of the half, leading 39-24 at halftime.
BSC maintained a comfortable lead through the second half, leading by as much as 21 before eventually winning by eight.
Ford went 6-9 from the field and 5-6 at the free throw line to lead all players with 17 points. DeBaets was also in double figures with 13 points, and led the team with seven rebounds. Ford and junior Ashley Curry led with three assists each, and Curry also led with six steals.
The Panthers return home this weekend, hosting Rust College on Sunday, Jan. 4, at 2 p.m. in Bill Battle Coliseum.
